Q: I am a surrogate and will soon be released to my OB. Will what I share with her be told to my Intended Parents or will my information be confidential?
A: This is a common concern because we all want someone to complain to about the discomforts of pregnancy even if we are carrying for ourselves. We certainly don't want our doctor running back to our Intended Parents and telling every single embarrassing thing that is happening to our bodies...like hemorrhoids, heartburn and our sexual concerns.
Let me put your fears to rest. You are the patient and your information is confidential. (Thanks to HIPPA) However you did sign an medical waver so your Intended Parents do have the right to hear about how their baby/babies are doing. (Although if a surrogate chose to be uncooperative I doubt that a Doctor would break Patient/Doctor confidentially and talk to the IP's without some sort of legal intervention.) In most cases that I have worked with, information was shared in a way that the IP's heard what they needed to know to feel comfortable regarding the pregnancy and the surrogate had the privacy that she needed.
