Amanda wrote of her wonderful experience pumping for the surro-twins she gave birth to about 18 months ago and instead of just having it as a comment to that particular blog article, Breast Milk…Can I Nurse My Baby? I thought I would post it today. Thank you, Amanda!

I have a comment to add to your Breast Milk…Can I Nurse My Baby? Blog. I am a one time surrogate (though I tried multiple times…) of beautiful boy/girl twins that are approaching 18 months. Having two children of my own, neither of which would nurse from me, I pumped my milk for both my boys. My OB had told me the benefits of pumping to not only helped my body but my babies. So, I knew from the start that I would pump my milk after the twins were born. If nothing else, to help me heal faster. I have a wonderful and open relationship with my IP’s from the start. It was a wonderful match from beginning to end. We talked many times about their wishes and they decided that since I was going to pump my milk anyway, they would utilize it for the babies as long as they were here with me. Then, as they read up on the benefits of breast milk, and knowing they could not nurse on their own, they asked me if I would mind pumping and shipping the milk to then after they left. Turns out, the hospital that I delivered in had never had a situation with a surrogacy before. The twins were born at 36 weeks and were in the NICU for 10 days. While I was in the hospital, they fed three feedings a day where the parents could come in with them…since they were premies, they made sure there was formula to help with their weight at the in between feedings. While I was in the hospital, I would pump in my room and waddle down with the bottles to feed the babies. My nurses were amazed at how fast I was up and moving after the c-section…but I had to see the babies… After I was released, the hospital was very weird about my bringing in the milk because they did not accept "donor" milk as it was not easily tested and that is what they considered me…they had lots of paperwork signed by all parties so that I could come in once a day with a cooler full of bottles to feed them. It was great, it got to where they were waiting for me go get there because the babies were going thru my milk so fast. It was a great experience for me and my IP’s were very satisfied with the results. They left 11 days after the twins were born and I continued to pump and ship milk to them from FL to NY until the twins were 8 weeks. Amanda Q. Jax. FL
